A slightly different format to the newsletter this week, beginning with my little sketch of Mark Carney.
Since he was elected Canadian prime minister on April 28th, Mark Carney has moved quickly to begin to address issues that became the central themes of the election: the health of the economy, especially in light of the trade tariffs imposed by the U.S. president; lowering interprovincial trade barriers; managing Canada’s energy resources; addressing housing shortages; improving medical care and revising immigration policy.
So far, Carney has been businesslike and has focused on transparency and collaboration. The tone between him and other party leaders has been civil and respectful. Canadians are watching to see if the trend will become the norm, which would be a welcome change. On Tuesday Carney will announce his cabinet.

Road painting
Now that winter is behind us, construction season on Canadian roads is moving at full speed. I was sitting in a café in Fergus (Ont.) when I drew this, watching a road crew getting ready to paint lane markings on the tarmac approaching a bridge over the Grand River.

A creative touch
I think this is a good idea! Whimsical and charming. It’s modeled after the book sharing boxes you find on some residential streets. I saw this in Elora, Ontario.

Spot the face
These tree ornaments always make me smile.
